Based on a statement by Secret Service on Monday, they will be running out of money to protect Trump on September 30. Director Randolph "Tex" Alles said that "The Secret Service estimates that roughly 1,100 employees will work overtime hours in excess of statutory pay caps during calendar year 2017. To remedy this ongoing and serious problem, the agency has worked closely with the Department of Homeland Security, the Administration, and the Congress over the past several months to find a legislative solution."
Trump and his family members have traveled extensively, both for business and vacations. They fly to their Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla. although not on every weekend but on a number of occasions and also this has added huge costs to Secret Service.
Due to the lifestyle of the first family and the number of people Secret Service needs to protect, the agency's staff has grown by 800 this year. Compared to Obama years when Secret Service had to provide around the clock protection to 31 people, now they need to provide it to 42 people, number that includes 18 members on Trump's family.
While even around the clock protection for this amount of people is costly, Trump's sons also attend to business meetings in a number of other countries, including Dubai and other places.
According to estimates, Obama-related travel expenses totaled around $97 million. Although no exact numbers have been provided, a good assumption is that Trump's four year expenses will be times that. For next year The Secret Service has already requested $60 million in additional funding, just to protect the Trump entourage.
While Secret Service funding is about to run out, and while theoretically Trump has given all his businesses over to his sons to run, a part of the public funding for Secret Service ends up directly in Trump's pockets, considering the Secret Service has had to pay for accommodation everywhere Trump is, and mostly it's at his golf clubs, at Trump Tower (where the rent goes up whenever he's not paying for it from his own pocket), etc. The exact number of how much the Trump Organization has made from public funding hasn't been disclosed, of course.
Before Trump took office, he criticized Obama times and times for costing taxpayers millions of dollars for traveling so much. And he pledged to save public money by skipping expensive travel and much more. But the only thing he did do was not to pledge not to take any presidential salary. Which he has done. But based on other facts, we can say with almost 100% certainty, that he's earning more from public funding through other means.
