While another country has now decided to develop and/or obtain nuclear weapons, we really must be wondering as to what the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), as the UN agency responsible for preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, might be doing with its time these days.
I have a fair idea.
Vienna has a reputation for great parties, great restaurants and the good Austrian city is a perfect spot for those poor diplomats and their hangers-on to have a very good time while the agency that employs them gently sleeps away into oblivious slumber.
Given, as I mentioned, that the IAEA is charged with preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the record of these party-goers speaks for itself. Countries that the IAEA should have prevented from obtaining nuclear weapons technology include India, Pakistan, Israel, Iran, North Korea, Libya and others with the latest addition to the list being Burma.
Burma might you ask?
Yes indeed, Burma.
Its generals, renowned for their human rights abuses and detention of those opposing the oppressive military regime, has been acquiring North Korean nuclear technology. For what purpose might one ask as Burma is not threatened by anyone? Well, pompous military dictators are a threatened species and the generals in Rangoon feel that such threatened species should be protected.
Indeed, the poor military souls in Rangoon pride themselves in their craft of abusing everyone around them and as they might be running out of people to abuse, why not make a bomb or two.
Meanwhile in Vienna, the party goes on and on and on. In fact the patronage of the IAEA has done wonders for the Austrian economy and it is said that some high-class restaurants as well as some very high-class brothels have been doing a roaring trade in recent years thanks to the IAEA.
As for the IAEA as an effective UN agency?
Like the UN itself, it is not very effective really and in fact, it is not very effective in any way shape or form. Loads of waffle and very little action.
My view is that the IAEA either gets on with the job of effectively preventing rogue states getting their hands on nuclear weapons or be abolished.
Now that's a bit harsh Mr Luf. The economy of the good city Vienna will be devastated. How sad.
