A five year program by the World Wildlife Fund and The World Bank has just been annouced, to combat the destruction of our trees worldwide.
More than 14 millions hectacre per year were destroyed during the 1900s, while only 5m2 million hectacre of forest were planted, still leaving a huge loss of 9.4 million hectare.
The two organisations established a 'Forest Alliance' in 1998. They intend to step-up their support of protected areas such as national parks. A 10% annual reduction in world-wide deforestation of 2010 is the overall goal, and increase protected areas coverage by 25 million hectares.
