Cardinals have just announced who the new pope will be - it's 78 year-old Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany. He is now Pope Benedict XVI. The previous pope, Pope John Paul II died on 2 April.
After the announcement had been made, thousands of people in St. Peter's Square shouted "Viva il Papa!" - "Viva il Papa!".
The cardinals managed to make the decision on the second day of the conclave. Ratzinger was known as very close to Pope John Paul II. Also his opinion about issues of church doctrine are rather conservative.
